hey, backing up to awhile ago...

this is sort of a bummer for Hardcore mode players. the characters at the top of the Hardcore leaderboard are going to have names like "Maelfynfourteen", because everyone's main name is going to be chewed up in an early error/death.

How would you resolve it so you chat with character names but also maintain an ability to re-use names? Message to user id's? Email addresses aren't an option. Account names? Maybe, but this leads to confusion, too. Every time this debate is brought up, there's no solution that makes everyone happy. EQ had a bomb ass social environment, so I just did it how they did it. Unique names. Das it mane.

I have half considered removing hardcore mode for this reason, but meh.

i don't know coding/databases nearly as well as you do, but seems like of those possibilities account names would probably work out the best (if its possible).

and noooooo don't remove hardcore mode!

OR when you die in hardcore mode instead of locking the character, have it reset his level/skills to 1, remove all his quest flags and talent points, and drop him off back in Edenburg naked.

I was wondering if people enjoy hardcore mode... it's a minority, but I'd think pretty intense... great for let's play sort of videos.

make sure it removes them from the leaderboard, too. :) if they're clumsy enough to die then they don't deserve a spot at the top anymore! :D

I kind of like having dead people on the leaderboard though. Starts to look like a graveyard. I like it.

ah yeah true, that is sort of neat too.

but yeah definitely don't get rid of hardcore mode. there are people out there like Vitality from Rerolled who are mainly interested in NG for the HC mode.

oh, i had a thought earlier too. when server accounts launch, everyone starts with four free character slots, right? there are going to be people that just start new accounts with a different email address rather than buying more character slots. not sure what if anything should be done about it, but yeah.

New accounts start with one character. I suppose you could endlessly create accounts with one character. If people resort to that then I assume they actually don't have disposable income. On the bright side my super awesome talent reset fee will get them every time. Ha ha!

sometimes when i am upgrading items i will end up with a negative value of gold. then when i zone out and zone back in i will have a positive number again. seems to happen every time i do a bunch of upgrades in a row, i so far have not figured out any specific steps to recreate the bug.

played with it some more. it must have been happening more than i realized, because all you have to do to see the bug is upgrade a bunch of times in a row (enough to get your gold down to or past 0). happens every time.

I'm currently converting a lot of text data types to varchar for performance reasons. If you notice anything explode or burst into flames please notify me. Nothing should go wrong as long as I set a proper maximum length.

old thread but don't get rid of hc! its all i do :). its a tiny niche but as an option it offers a lot to the single player experience for some of us.

i don't have any strong opinion on the names issue.. other than not a problem to me personally to keep remaking new names.

however one thing that may come up down the line is crystal requirements for hc character runs. if i have to buy a new slot for each hc run it may end up being my primary crystal expense in the long-run. just a thought but it might refund crystal usage for char creation when the hc char slot dies.

Unlocking character slots increases the total number of characters you can have, so that shouldn't be a problem. You'd just have to delete the dead character. But, yes, the unique name issue came up a few times. I plan to add a "nuclear delete" option to completely remove characters from the leaderboard and everything, but only if it's your own character.
