I read a few posts by Maelfyn earlier in reference to Diablo II, mentioning inspiration from the game and its systems.

The obvious like the item rarity colour scheme, that's a rather direct reference. Several uniques, Lenymo Sash, Bonesnap, Eye of Riltan (Eye of Etlich), Rendo's Bonnet (Biggin's Bonnet), Coif of Glory, Crushflange, Bloodfist Gloves, Snakecord, perhaps more I haven't seen/recognised.

I believe the drop system is also based on the TC (Treasure Class) system Diablo II used too.

I also noticed the clans of the Anuran are named after various runes. Vex, Amn, Dol, Zod off the top of my head.

Anybody else notice references/mechanics to Diablo II?

I saw an earlier beta picture too, with the Warcraft icons as skill placeholder icons, although I'm sure that's less of a reference than just using some nice looking icons.

Awesome to see some of those names again. They all seem to be pretty low-level D2 uniques, no? Twinkfare.
Why do I keep seeing "Eye of Ritalin?"
I never got better than an Ohm rune.
Makes me want to fire up my Bowazon...

A few rare enemies have Diablo II references as well (e.g. Corpsefire)...

Not sure how that flew over my head. Considering I've bashed that little zombies head in a considerable amount of times in both games now.
