The Upgrade Item option in town lets you spend the gold you earn on enhancing your equipment. You can upgrade an item up to 10 times, with each time costing more gold and providing a greater effect. Upgrading an armor item will add bonus armor and resist all. Upgrading a weapon will give you the choice between increasing all physical or increasing all magical damage you deal. Shields are considered armor items and Spellcaster Off-hand items are considered weapons for upgrading. Two-handed weapons receive double the damage enhancement bonus. Accessories like Necklaces, Rings, Cloaks, Trinkets, and Bows cannot be upgraded. Success is always guaranteed. Upgrade Item.PNG

EDIT= Costs for upgrading weapons are higher [50/100/200/400/800/1500/2500/4000/6000/10000]; armor increases shown are for normal items, values are higher for exceptional items and further more for elite items (evidence suggests they could be a percentage of the item base armor value); resistances bonuses are fixed.
